Not too long ago, the idea of accidentally calling another country was a terrifying prospect because of the cost. Fortunately, we can now speak to any country pretty much whenever. It’s worth knowing, then, how people answer the phone all around the world. The popularity of the English “hello” has influenced dialects worldwide, but there are still plenty of ways to respond to the ring of a phone. That’s why it can be useful to learn how to answer the phone in different languages.
A brief note: Not everyone in a country answers the phone the same way. In fact, Alexander Graham Bell’s preferred way to answer the phone was “Ahoy,” which has very sadly fallen out of use. If you speak one of these languages and answer the phone a different way than the quiz says, let us know!
